Construction is well under way on the retail portion of this impressive mixed-use project in the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo. Once completed, it will boast approximately 50,000 square feet of retail space, plus additional offices and residential units. Currently the project appears to be a blank dirt lot on either side of an existing brick building, but a closer inspection reveals over 80 drilled concrete caissons ranging from 24” to 30” in diameter, and plunging roughly 30 feet deep in some locations. Formwork is in place at the back of the project in preparation for the nearly 18-foot tall site wall bounding the project on three sides. Construction crews worked closely with archaeologists to recover artifacts discovered on site, as well as historic walls and foundations from the 19th and 20th centuries. The project is expected to wrap up in the summer or fall of 2016.
